Odoo Licensing Guide

Odoo Community License
The Odoo Community version operates under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPLv3), derived from the General Public License (GPL) introduced by the Free Software Foundation. The GPL is a widely used open-source license that allows the licensee to use, modify, and distribute the software, provided the same license is maintained, including the source code. The LGPL allows similar usage but permits the licensee to distribute newly developed software under any license, while the covered software library or dependencies must be distributed under the same LGPL license.
Odoo Enterprise License
Odoo Enterprise operates under a proprietary license (v1.0) that restricts users from executing, modifying, or executing modifications of the Odoo Enterprise edition without a valid subscription. The subscription is user-based, and exceeding the licensed number of users is illegal. Only Odoo partners are authorized to modify and execute the software unless it is in a production or live environment. Distributing, selling, or sublicensing the Odoo Enterprise edition or its modified versions is prohibited. Subscribers can, however, use Odoo modules from the Odoo Apps store or other platforms regardless of their licenses.
Odoo Free App License
Odoo's Free App License permits developers to create and use free applications within both Odoo Enterprise and Community versions. The Enterprise license allows the usage of free apps from the Odoo Apps store without any payment requirements. Since the Community version is licensed under LGPLv3, developers can publish and distribute free apps under any license. However, any core community add-ons must adhere to the LGPLv3 license to ensure consistency and compliance. This flexibility encourages innovation while maintaining the integrity of the open-source ecosystem.
Odoo Paid App License
Paid add-ons available in the Odoo Apps store come under specific licenses. To use these add-ons legally, they must be purchased or obtained with written permission from the author. Like the Odoo Enterprise edition, selling, distributing, modifying, or sublicensing these add-ons is not permitted. However, they can be used as libraries to build new modules, import features without copying anything from the add-on, and distributed under any license that does not contradict the proprietary license such as LGPL, MIT, etc. ny errors or bugs, ensuring smooth and stable operation of your Odoo system.

Frequently Most Trending & Popular Question

Odoo Community operates under the LGPLv3 license, which allows for modification and distribution under the same license, while Odoo Enterprise has a proprietary license that requires a subscription and restricts modifications without permission.
Yes, you can use free apps with both Odoo Community and Enterprise versions. The Community version allows publishing and distribution under any license, while the Enterprise version permits usage without payment.
The Odoo Enterprise license prohibits executing, modifying, or distributing the software without a valid subscription. Only authorized Odoo partners can modify and execute the software in a live environment.
LGPLv3 requires that any modifications or derived works from the core community add-ons must be distributed under the same LGPLv3 license, ensuring the open-source nature is maintained.
To use paid add-ons legally, they must be purchased or have written permission from the author. Unauthorized selling, distributing, modifying, or sublicensing these add-ons is prohibited.
Yes, under the LGPLv3 license, you can distribute your newly developed software under any license, provided that the core community add-ons remain under LGPLv3.
When integrating third-party modules with Odoo Enterprise, ensure they comply with Odoo's licensing terms and do not violate the proprietary license of the Enterprise edition.
Odoo’s licensing model, with its combination of LGPLv3 for the Community version and a proprietary license for the Enterprise version, encourages innovation by allowing flexibility in development while ensuring compliance with licensing terms.
